Transalp 2005 Oberstdorf - Lake Como

On gorgeous valleys and mouldy swamps

At Schrofenpass

Push and carry your bike with a scenic view.

An traverse through the Eastern Alps on a mountain bike. Florian and me cross the Schrofenpass near Oberstdorf in Bavaria and enter the Austrian State of Vorarlberg. We ride the Verwall and the Silvretta Mountains on our full-suspension bikes. We climb the snowy Fimberpass and "swim" through the Val d'Uina (Uina Valley). On our way through the Münstertal (Val Müstair) to Pass Umbrail we enter Val Vau and cross the Val Mora. Marvelous singletrails lead us to Lake San Giacomo in Italy. The Val Viola (Viola Valley) offers another tour highlight before we descend to the Valtellina and finish at Lake Como.

The itinerary is based on a tour by Achim Zahn. It has been published in the German magazine Mountain BIKE. Details are available on both websites. Mountain BIKE offers a pay-for-download version including the elevation profile. Michael Brueggen did the original tour under good weather conditions. Find his report at www.offroad-only.de, including GPS data for download.

The bad weather made us shorten some stages. We didn't take the route across Passo San Marco but directly went through the Valtellina to Lake Como. We preferred a soft bed and a hot shower down in the valleys and in the respective inns and hotels from staying in mountain lodges on top.
